Affinity groups

ANNOUNCEMENT: CREATION OF INTERNATIONAL AFFINITY GROUPS

At its recent Board meeting in New York City, the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics decided to move to the next stage of facilitating exchanges and greater mutual understanding between its member associations and institutions by setting up and supporting Affinity Groups that can communicate and work on common challenges at all times.

The interest in the World Congresses has shown that the colleges and polytechnics of the world share many common challenges and can benefit enormously from exchanging on the great diversity of solutions developed to meet those common challenges. It is time to allow them to continue that exchange year-round and to more rapidly develop common innovative solutions by pulling together the best minds from our rich and diverse membership.

The Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics of New Zealand (ITP) committed to updating the WFCP Website and adding the capacity of setting up listservs and intranets for the affinity groups that the membership will want to create.

The Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) committed to beginning the discussion and facilitating the dialogue within these groups, as it has the experience of doing so with for 50 affinity groups with over 7,000 members from its 150 member institutions.

It was furthermore decided that the first group to be created would be on the very timely topic and urgent challenge of how colleges and polytechnics can provide leadership in environmental stewardship and education, and in appropriate training to support the rapid spread of the renewable energy technologies. It is hoped that we can work on these challenges in the spirit of global collaboration talked about at this Congress.

Each member country, via its association or an individual institution, is asked to select two or three of its leading professionals in this field to begin the affinity group and the discussion. The group will eventually be open to all who want to join once this smaller coordinating group has a chance to determine what the best ways of proceeding might be.

You are therefore asked to leave your business card or e-mail the names of your volunteers to Paul Brennan at the ACCC (PBRENNAN@ACCC.CA) or with any other member of the WFCP Board.
