TAFE NSW - ILLAWARRA INSTITUTEBarry Peddle has been the Institute Director of the TAFE NSW - Illawarra Institute for over eight years and prior to that the inaugural Institute Director of the Riverina Institute of TAFE for seven years. TAFE NSW - Illawarra Institute delivers programs to 40,000 students annually throughout south-east New South Wales, geographically covering 18 local government areas, through 14 campuses and four associated centres, using 450 full time and 1,800 part-time educational staff. We are a key national educational leader, and our strong position is based on the broad range of customised programs, the quality and expertise of our staff, a flexible approach to program delivery, recognition of existing workplace skills and nationally accredited qualifications that are internationally recognised, and highly regarded by industry and the community. Due to the large geographical area and the diverse number and range of industries within our region, a large component of our delivery is conducted on-the-job, which has resulted in the development of customised resources, learning materials and assessment methodologies with each individual, organisation and employer. We strive to provide a skilled workforce and through our products and services, and we work to enable the development and employment of our students. The delivery of the Institute's programs is managed through nine faculties: Access; Building and Construction; Business Services; Engineering, Manufacturing and Mining; General Education; Information Technology, Arts and Media; Personal, Community and Health Services; Tourism and Hospitality; Transport, Rural and Maritime. In addition to providing vocational education and training programs for our geographic region, we are increasingly providing programs of state-wide, national and indeed international significance, especially in considered niche markets where there is a high level of specialized expertise available from Institute staff. Some of the specific areas include: bricklaying; electrical installations in hazardous locations; child studies for special needs; wound management for nurses; mine technology installation; quarry management; water management and waste water treatment. The outstanding quality of our Institute's programs is demonstrated through four of our students being selected as part of the 28 member Australian WorldSkills team for the international competition in Switzerland in 2003. The results achieved included a silver medal in machining, bronze in Bricklaying, sixth place in Bricklaying and eleventh place in Plumbing. Similarly the expertise of our teaching and educational staff is demonstrated through four of our staff being selected as judges for the international WorldSkills contest, in Baking, (Head International judge), Bricklaying, Hairdressing and Refrigeration.
