World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics

NEWS 2008-09: CREATION OF INTERNATIONAL AFFINITY GROUPS more...

Message from the Chair

Welcome to the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP), an international network of colleges and associations of colleges established at a World Congress in 1999 in Quebec City (Canada) in order to provide leadership in the delivery of workforce education and lifelong learning which benefit society and the global economy. Subsequent Congresses were held in Melbourne, (2003), Dubai (2005) and New York City (2008).

The WFCP aims to be a strong and united voice through which members can promote the contributions of colleges to their communities; share information, best practices and experience; enhance staff and student mobility; and influence the development of policy.

At its last Congress held in New York City in February 2008, the WFCP established its first affinity group on environmental sustainability and renewable resources. Representatives from colleges and polytechnics from around the world committed to assume more of a leadership role in order to ensure a sustainable future.

Consistent with the goals of the WFCP, the affinity group aims to foster a culture of sustainability and promote the concept of global environmental citizenship. Twenty years after the Brundtland Report (Our Common Future), and half way along the UN Decade of Education on Sustainable Development (2005 -2014), members recognized that there is an urgency to act now. It was recognized that ‘Education to Action’ is the key to sustainability and colleges and polytechnics are in a privileged position to contribute in making their communities socially vibrant, economically secure and environmentally sustainable.

I trust that the site will provide you with sufficient information to persuade you to join this new dynamic network of colleges and polytechnics. The success of this venture depends on the active involvement and commitment of its membership worldwide.

Dr George Boggs
